Tugboat Tow Granite Barge Fire

Karimun - Tugboat "Bulan" took Alvin barge, transporting granite purpose to Singapore, fire in the waters of Meral District, Karimun regency, Riau Islands province, Thursday.

Tugboat Bulan fire started at about 3:30 am when holding barge "Alvin" after loading dock of granite from granite company PT Tri Megah Perkasa Utama (TMPU) in Pangke Village, Meral District.

Captain Agung with seven crew survived the accident. However, one of his crew reportedly suffered burns and undergoing medical treatment in hospital in Tebing District.


Skippers and crew managed to escape after jumping onto the barge Alvin at the back of the tugboat.

Alvin barge survived the fire as a liaison to the stern of the tugboat chains terminated by the crew.

Operations Section officer (Pasops) Navy Base (Lanal) Tanjung Balai Karimun Captain Agus Yunianto justify the fire.

"It happened this morning when tugboat and barge that sailed from the pier PT TMPU to Singapore," he said.

Agus said it has not received information regarding the cause of the fire, the fire was quickly apparent to all parts of the ship.
