Oil Spill Response Procedures Applied in Karimun Waters

Standard operating procedures accidental oil spill response vessel fuel oil applied in the waters of Karimun regency, Riau Islands Province.

Oil spill response operations team was led by the Administrator of Port of Tanjung Balai Karimun with members of all relevant agencies and corporate users of port services.

Administrator Port of Tanjung Balai Karimun, Gajah Rooseno said, the formation of oil spill response team that aims to tackle accidents fuel oil freighter in the waters that lead to pollution at sea.

''The formation of this oil spill response team is a follow-up of the Government Regulation No. 21/2010 on the Protection of Maritime Environment,'' he said.

The team will work on the basis of international law relating to marine oil spill response.

Oil spill response procedures, he said, is to minimize the impact caused by accident or collision tanker.

During this time, he said, activity in the waters of Karimun, including ship to ship transfer port does not have oil spill response procedure.

''Formation oil spill response team that aims to provide assurance and protection for ships carrying fuel oil had an accident at sea. In addition, also to prevent pollution at sea from a pool of oil,'' he said.

General Manager of PT Pelindo I Branch Tanjung Balai Karimun, Agastiyan Kenanga Bumi said it had bought equipment for oil spill prevention worth USD 1 million.

Equipment purchased the oil containment booms, oil sprayer systems, oil skimmers, oil spill dispersant, absorbent booms and absorbent pads.

PT Pelindo I Tanjung Balai Karimun Branch also prepared four tugboat which is used to cope with oil spills from ships at sea accidents.(kepri online daily/kabar kepri)
